can swiss citizens work in the uk after brexit

After Brexit, the rules for Swiss citizens working in the UK have changed. Switzerland is not a member of the European Union (EU) but has a close relationship with the EU through bilateral agreements. As a result, Swiss citizens were previously treated similarly to EU citizens in terms of immigration and work rules in the UK.

Since the UK’s withdrawal from the EU (Brexit), the free movement of people between the UK and EU/EEA countries (including Switzerland) has ended. However, Swiss citizens can still work in the UK, but they are subject to the new points-based immigration system introduced by the UK government.

Here are the current rules:

  1. Existing residents: Swiss citizens who were living in the UK before December 31, 2020, can apply for settled status under the UK’s EU Settlement Scheme. This scheme allows them to continue living and working in the UK without any restrictions.
  2. New arrivals: Swiss citizens who want to move to the UK for work after January 1, 2021, will need to apply for a visa under the points-based immigration system. This system requires applicants to meet specific criteria, such as:

    • Having a job offer from a licensed sponsor (employer) with a minimum salary of £25,600 (or the going rate for the job).
    • Meeting the required points for attributes such as language proficiency, qualifications, and experience.
    • Paying an application fee (currently £610-£1,408) and the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS).
  3. Work permit: If a Swiss citizen is offered a job in the UK, their employer must apply for a work permit (also known as a Certificate of Sponsorship) on their behalf. The employer must demonstrate that they cannot find a suitable candidate within the UK or EU.
  4. Youth Mobility Scheme: Swiss citizens aged 18-30 can apply for a Youth Mobility Scheme (YMS) visa, which allows them to live and work in the UK for up to 2 years.

In summary, while Swiss citizens can still work in the UK after Brexit, they are subject to the new points-based immigration system, which requires them to meet specific criteria and apply for a visa. Existing residents can apply for settled status, while new arrivals will need to navigate the new visa requirements.
